Breast Cancer Screening

BREAST CANCER Screening

Breast Cancer Screening by Mammogram is the most  important step in cancer prevention.

infections, lumps, discharge & Breast Cancer Screening

Pain in breasts around mensturation is a common symptom and can be relieved with simple painkillers. Most breast cancers are painless lumps!

Watery discharge and greeninsh discharge are common in benign(non cancerous) conditions. Blood stained discharge needs investigation.

A very common feature in  most women. Most lumps are non cancerous like fibroadenomas. Most malignant lumps are PAINLESS.

Orange peel appearance of skin, puckering, dimpling and bulge can be signs of cancer. Ulcer is a late feature. Redness of skin can be rare finding in cancer.

Nipple inversion, ulceration and blood stained nipple discharge can be signs of cancer. These changes are very rarely can be due to non cancer causes.

Rarely breast cancer presents with lumps/  swellings in the armpit called lymph nodes without the lump in the breast being felt.

BREAST PHYSIOLOGY

Breast like uterus is under the influence of hormones. With each cycle of mensturation under the influence of female hormones several changes happen in the breast.

Hence it is very common women complaining of pain in the breast, heaviness of breast during the monthly cycles and such symptoms can be safely ignored.

It is the same cyclical changes that result in lumpiness in the breast and sometimes fibroadenomas. Many of these changes can be ignored. Fibroadenomas are painless and may grow in size. Very small lumps can be followed while larger might need surgery.

We understand the importance of cosmesis and plan our incisions to ensure least scarring. Also we prefer and encourage usage of “Circum Aerolar” incisions which are almost invisible. Our understanding of the breast physiology helps us understand when not to intervene surgically for the best outcomes.
